Book Review: 10 Secrets of Being a Lady

10 Secrets of Being a Lady: Written by Sheba Matheu; illustrated by Meredith Rushing

I was interested in this book because I am an advocate for teaching young girls and women on how to practice having a positive self esteem. In fact I am not only an advocate for it, but I believe that it is my purpose. Anything that supports my that I am all for it; so when the opportunity came to read a book (which reading is one of my hobbies), and cupped together with supporting young girls on how to properly care for themselves, then I volunteered myself immediately!

I am not sure how to properly do a book review, but if I had to give it a grade it would be an A! If I had to give it stars it would be 3 stars! If I had to give it thumbs up, I would give it 2 thumbs up!

The book is about a little girl by the name of Ava who is very eager to learn! Her mom is taking the time to share the 10 secrets of Being a Lady to her.

A few things I loved about the book:

  • The illustration is beautiful! It’s so cute!!
  • The words (wording). I loved that different words were used by the author. Being in the education field, and being someone who loves words, and writing, I noticed this right away. And I loved it because it gave me a chance to expose my girls to new vocabulary (and I didn’t notice till we were done that the words and the meanings were in the back of the book)
  • There was something very unique about the book, and something that my girls picked up on right away was that in almost every page, the mom was reading and the illustration in the book matched the illustration in the book the mom was reading!! So unique!!!

The one thing that I can say was the book was a little lengthy, but I have a 7 and 8 yr old so I would read a page, and we would switch off reading pages so that we can all get a chance! And they loved it!!!

It was a perfect read for my girls and I will definitely be using it for future workshops for Abundantly Authentic’s self-esteem program.

I would encourage you to be apart of making a difference in a young lady’s life, and this can easily start at home if you have a daughter, a niece, a sister.
